Concept of Health and Illness

Introduction to the Human Health Experience

Health is a deeply personal state that goes far beyond the simple absence of disease. Every individual experiences health uniquely, shaped by their physical body, mental state, social surroundings, and cultural background. In midwifery practice in Nigeria, understanding this broader human experience helps caregivers treat the whole woman rather than focusing solely on a single symptom or pregnancy complication.

Defining Health and Illness

Health is often described as a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity, according to the World Health Organization. Illness, on the other hand, is a highly subjective experience where a person feels unhealthy, impaired, or disrupted in their normal daily functioning, regardless of whether a formal medical diagnosis exists.

The Health-Illness Continuum

The health-illness continuum is a visual model that views health as a dynamic, changing state rather than a fixed category. A person moves back and forth along a sliding scale between optimal wellness at one end and premature death at the other. Daily choices, environment, and unexpected life events constantly shift a person's position on this scale.

Variables Influencing Health and Health Beliefs

People view and manage their health differently based on internal and external factors. Internal variables include genetic makeup, developmental stage, age, and emotional state. External variables encompass family practices, socioeconomic status, cultural background, and access to healthcare infrastructure. Midwives must recognize these influences because they directly affect whether a mother seeks antenatal care or follows medical advice.

The Impact of Illness on the Patient and Family

Illness rarely affects an individual in isolation. When a family member falls sick or experiences a health crisis, the entire household feels the ripple effects. Common impacts include behavioral and emotional changes, loss of body image, disruption of family roles, and financial strain. Midwives often witness how maternal illness alters household dynamics, requiring supportive nursing interventions that include the entire family network.
